TOE FUNGUS

Toe fungus (onychomycosis) is a fungal infection causing discolored, thick, and brittle nails. It’s common among runners and active middle-aged individuals.

Risk Factors:

Several factors may increase the risk of developing toe fungus including: older age, sweaty feet, athlete's foot history, walking barefoot in communal areas, nail injury, diabetes or weakened immune system.

Symptoms:

Common symptoms include: nail discoloration, thickening and distortion of the nail, brittle or crumbly nail, foul odor, pain or discomfort.

Diagnosis:

Toe fungus is typically diagnosed based on a physical exam and lab tests on nail clippings to identify the fungus.

Prevention:

To prevent toe fungus or reduce the risk of recurrence, you can: keep feet dry and clean, wear breathable footwear, avoid barefoot walking in damp public spaces, use antifungal products, maintain short, neatly-trimmed nails, avoid nail polish and artificial nails.

Treatment Options:

Treatment for toe fungus may include: topical antifungal creams, oral antifungal medications, medicated nail polish or creams, nail removal (for severe cases), laser therapy.
